Overview, Setup, Strategy and Playthrough Mission C2

I tried to make these videos kind of a tutorial on how to play Rogue Angels and win without firing a shot! :)

Overview and Setup:

Strategy (note that there are TWO ways to succeed in this mission and this strategy is only applicable to success by being sneaky:) :

Playthrough (note that if you play aggressively to destroy the enemies, your game play will be nothing like this, so this won’t be a spoiler for you at all:)

When your mission ends, sometimes it will be extended or continued. Sometimes on that same map, other times on a different map. Don’t reset or change anything unless told otherwise. Here is how the mission update works using mission C2 into update 1:

Next I played through the UPDATE 1A mission for C2:

Intro video for Mission C2 (second mission)

Here is my intro to the 2nd main mission in Rogue Angels (from Campaign Book Chapter One). I am trying to figure out how to do a nice tutorial for this C2 mission as it is a great mission to use for a tutorial. I think I can do it turn by turn with one short video for each turn. Then just merge them all into one larger video to post to YouTube. However … I am having lots of difficulties in finding a way to do this that is not complex :)

Here is my first attempt … can you tell that I merged three videos into this one larger video?

Estimated box size

For those interested … the box size for the final game still has not been determined, but the latest estimate from the game developer (Emil) makes it to be a little wider, little deeper and taller than the prototype box that I have:

The prototype box dimensions are:

17 inches wide
12 inches deep
2 1/4 inches high

The final game will need to hold more components than the prototype, so of course it will be bigger. For example, the final map should be the same size and the enemy standees basically the same. I think twice as many dice. A bit more cards (I think 5 more for each of the 16 heroes). But there will be six campaign books (only one in the prototype). Also the enemy bases will be a custom designed rotating base to track hit points, so maybe 24 of those instead of the plain plastic standee bases in the prototype. And there will be 16 hero miniatures (these likely will add the most space needed for the box – but won’t add to it’s weight like the extra books will).

On September 11, 2024, the game designer (Emil) provided an estimate (not final) size for the box. Compared to the prototype box it will be:

2 inches wider
2 inches deeper
3 1/2 inches taller

This latest estimate in metric is 500 x 360 x 150mm. This estimated size will provide proper safe storage, easy access, and ability to sleeve components.

Enemies in Rogue Angels compared to Mass Effect the Board Game

It’s hard to make a video all by yourself:)

But I tried! I used a small tripod. But often I needed to show things on the maps, so I had to pick up the whole tripod and try to point it at the right spot on the map (usually I got it right… but I missed a bit once:)

That said … here’s my overview of the enemies in the two Mass Effect style games:

If you watch just one video review – This One!

Board Game Officer did a marvelous job with this video. And I don’t say “job” lightly … he actually watched 47 video reviews (and TOOK NOTES) … then he compiled the Good, the Bad and the Unique into one video all in under 30 minutes. I haven’t seen anything like it before! Good Work!

The video itself is from a year ago, but it really sums up everything Rogue Angels so well … and is a perfect way to review everything that is part of Rogue Angels now that there is another Mass Effect game coming out soon. So if you are wondering which of the two games to get, I’d suggest this:

  1. Watch the 47 Reviews Summarized Video
  2. Read the 4 page Mass Effect Rules Summary to get an idea of how that game works
  3. Read my 3 page comparison article

Here is everything you need:

The 47 Reviews Summarized Video:

The summary of Mass Effect The Board Game rules:

=> Mass Effect The Board Game Rules Summary

And … the 3 page article that compares the two games:

=> Comparing Rogue Angels and Mass Effect The Board Game

And A Bonus Feature

If you like comparing games … I made a video comparing ISS Vanguard and Rogue Angels that you might enjoy:

Now is The Time

And if you decide that you like Rogue Angels … be sure to put in your “order” (actually a Late Pledge now) for it! The price will go up slightly at the end of this month plus it is a more limited printing (is that the term?) of only 3,000 copies!

=> Late Pledge for Rogue Angels

And a final thought … and final THANK YOU to Board Game Officer! That was a TON of work to put together your review of reviews! Thank you so much! And let’s end this with the image that Board Game Officer wants you to see:

Rogue Angels and Mass Effect games compared

The TWO Mass Effect style board games compared (v2)

Note: After posting here, I posted this on BoardGameGeek in the Mass Effect forum. If you have comments or wish to participate in this discussion, please do so there:
=> BoardGameGeek Mass Effect Forum article

Of the two Mass Effect style games, there are many similarities (as you’d expect) but some significant differences as well. The games (both like to have LONG game names, so I will continue using just the first two words in each name):

  • Mass Effect: The Board Game – Priority Hagalaz (Mass Effect)
  • Rogue Angels: Legacy of the Burning Suns (Rogue Angels)

Both games are similar in many ways:

  • Both are a cooperative series of tactical, strategic missions with a team of heroes through a campaign.
  • Both have a variety of grid maps that show where to place various tokens on the grid.
  • Both have a 40 some page rule book as well as a narration book along with setup instructions for each mission.
  • Both include miniatures for your heroes. You choose which heroes you wish to use in your campaign.
  • Both games have damage / hazard cards and a variety of enemies that cause you problems.
  • Both games have ways that a hero can level up or be upgraded (better or stronger for the next mission).
  • Both can have a hero get “knocked out” in battles. Other heroes can come to revive them.
  • They both have branching missions and include a large handful of shared custom D6 dice.
  • Both include an interactive “draw bag” as well as a dry erase marker.
  • Both have an easy and quick way to “save” your game so you can continue on another day.
  • Fans of Mass Effect should enjoy BOTH games.

But it is the differences that set the games apart. I have a prototype of Rogue Angels and have scrutinized the rule book and other materials for Mass Effect (as well as watched most of the videos), so I think I am in a fairly good position to compare and look at the differences: some minor, some major. Some you won’t care about and others will suit you fine either way. However, you might find one of the games a bit more to your liking based on differences that matter to YOU, so let’s take a look!
