Tarira Action Cards

If you like playing a hero that is good with attacking, Tarira might be your hero! Four of her cards are attack cards and her fifth card is an Effect card that will add 1 die to every action as long as it is on the Cooldown track and that will increase the damage for three of her attack cards! Plus she starts out with a VERY dominating personality giving you two red tokens at the start of each mission right from your very first mission. She made it into three of the top lists:

Intimidating Battlecry

  • Card classification: Ability
  • Cooldown Track Slot: 1 (but since it is an Effect card, you likely will play it to slot 4)
  • Dice: 2 dice (but dice are not interconnected with the card’s action)

Once per action, you may spend 1 shield to add 1 die and 1 movement to that action.

The two dice are only used when the card is initially played and since it is an Effect card, you will want to play it in Cooldown slot 4. As long as the card is in the Cooldown track (including when it is initially played) you can spend 1 shield to add 1 die AND 1 movement to the action. Since the card should remain in the Cooldown track for 3 more turns this could very well add 1 die to 7 actions (extremely useful) plus add 1 movement to 7 or even 8 actions (a lot of extra movement). Once the card slides off the Cooldown track it goes back into your hand and you can immediately play it again if you wish! There are no boosts available at the beginning of the campaign.

Laelia Action Cards

Laelia has an excellent Action card for healing, attacking and hacking! She is only 1 of 4 heroes with healing ability! She is in FOUR of the best of lists (and #1 in two of them):

Hacking Drone

  • Card classification: Gear (Scanner)
  • Cooldown Track Slot: 3
  • Dice: 2 dice

Interact with an object for 2 within [4] squares

It can be extremely useful to interact with an object from a distance, and Laelia can do it from 4 squares away (or even further with a good roll of the dice). Plus she can interact for 2 (not just one). Boosts available:

  • Red token: -1 Cooldown track (place on slot 2 instead of 3)
  • Green token: Move an ally 3 squares

Melithys Action Cards

Melithys has the most weapon Action cards at the start of the game (along with Talya and Xalia) and one of them (Shrapnel Grenades) is very powerful. But Melithys has interesting Action cards… all of them deliver a one two punch (or have a kind of bonus second effect) – maybe we can refer to Melithys as the hero with the Dual Purpose Actions:

  • Shrapnel Grenades can damage two or more enemies
  • Adrenaline Rush moves and then can boost your focus and shields
  • Unstoppable Advance moves and then can deal unblockable damage
  • Leviathan Blade can damage two enemies with one blow
  • Vibro Battle Axe can add movement after damaging the enemy

However, Melithys does not have any unique interaction or healing cards.

Shrapnel Grenades

  • Card classification: Weapon (Explosives)
  • Cooldown Track Slot: 3
  • Dice: 1 die (but dice are not interconnected with the card’s action)

Choose a square within a range of 5 and deal 1 unblockable damage to all characters within a range of 2 of the chosen square

This is quite a powerful weapon. Not only can it deal damage from afar (range 5) but it’s damage is unblockable! But the best part is that it will damage multiple enemies all at the same time as long as they are within range of 2 from where you choose the grenade to go off! The die rolled does not improve any of this (but you could roll a shield or movement that would help). And since it is played to Cooldown track 3, if you rest once, it will be available for use again in two turns. Boosts available:

  • Red token: +1 die
  • Yellow token: Move an ally 2 squares

Sigyn Action Cards

Sigyn is one of just 3 heroes that have the jump ability. Plus Sigyn’s Disruption Suit is an Effect card that is continually available as long as the card is on the cooldown track. This may be the only hero who can reduce the shields on an enemy that is being attacked!

Disruption Suit

  • Card classification: Gear
  • Cooldown Track Slot: 2 (but since it is an Effect card, you likely place it in slot 4)
  • Dice: 2 dice (but dice are not interconnected with the card’s action)

You have +2 squares to all your movement actions. All adjacent enemies have -2 shields

This is an Effects card, so, as long as it is on the cooldown track both conditions are active! That will boost all movement by 2 squares plus any attack against an enemy will reduce their shields by 2 (thus with 1 or 2 shields the shields will be gone). No available boosts at the start of the campaign.

Xalia Action Cards

At the start of the campaign, Xalia has the most weapon cards (along with Talya and Melithys) PLUS she also is #1 in dealing an unblockable attack! And if you like rolling dice, Xalia’s action cards NEED you to roll them (the value starts at 0 for two of the cards).

Exo Shuriken

  • Card classification: Weapon
  • Cooldown Track Slot: 3
  • Dice: 3 dice (but dice are not interconnected with the card’s action)

Deal 2 unblockable damage to all enemies within a range of 2

Not only is the damage unblockable, but it is more than one PLUS you deal damage to every enemy that is within a range of 2, making this a great card to play when you get surrounded. However, any dice rolled will not increase the range nor the damage. Boosts available:

  • Red token: +1 die (not connected with the action of the card)
  • Blue token: -1 Cooldown track (place it on slot 2 instead of 3)

Jastin Action Cards

Jastin is one of just four heroes with healing ability plus an Effect card that can be used at the end of every turn as long as it remains on the cooldown track. Jastin also is the only hero with an Action card that can be treated as either a weapon or as an ability (thus if instructions for the mission state that heroes must discard (for the time being) all weapon cards, Jastin can keep the card by referring to it as an Ability card.

Hacker Drone

  • Card classification: Gear
  • Cooldown Track Slot: 1 (but since it is an ongoing effect, you likely want to play it in slot 4)
  • Dice: 1 die (but dice are not interconnected with the card’s action)

At the end of your turn, before the free rest action, you may interact with an object within a range of 3 for 2.

Since this is an EFFECT card, as long as it is on your cooldown track you gain the stated action after your turn. This card is interesting in that it lets you interact with any object within a range of 3 for 2 (the die is only used when the card is played, not subsequent turns while on the cool down track). No boosts available to begin with.

Comparing ISS Vanguard and Rogue Angels

Both ISS Vanguard and Rogue Angels are cooperative science fiction campaign games with a choose your own adventure feel. Both are excellent. ISS Vanguard is totally final now (I have both Wave 1 and Wave 2). Rogue Angels is still a prototype with the final expected in November 2024.

I thought it would be helpful to have a video showing the two games side by side. This hopefully will help you understand how they are similar as well as different.  If you already have ISS Vanguard you might be looking for another similar game to play next… and Rogue Angels just might be that game for you. If you don’t have either and are wondering which to get, this might let you see things in one or the other that fit your gaming style.

Here is the video. I will add some text below it soon (it is already almost 2am).

Information to help compare the games will be here below the video soon.

Invisible Individual

Only one of our heroes has cloaking ability. This is like going invisible while an enemy is attacking (they can’t see you so they can’t target you). Since this is an Effect card, you likely will want to play it to a higher cooldown track slot so it stays in effect longer.

Cloaking Suit

Hero: Gia – As long as this effect card is on your cooldown track, enemies cannot target you when they attack. Note that if you interact with something or deal any damage then this card must be removed from your cooldown track back into your hand.
